Frequently Asked Questions

Products and Services

Spring Hill and Highland Cemeteries are available for burial.  Pat’s Branch and Guyandotte Cemeteries are historical cemeteries and not available for burials anymore. Our community mausoleum is located at Spring Hill.

We have many beautiful spaces in Spring Hill and Highland to choose from.  You may have a specific idea in mind, perhaps something near other family members, an area with upright markers, with flat markers, or a Veteran’s area.

In Ground Burial
For in ground burial, you must purchase three things: the space, the interment services (commonly called the open and close) and a burial vault.

Mausoleum Entombment
We have a community mausoleum or can work with you on  purchasing a private mausoleum.  When using the community mausoleum, you must purchase the crypt and the interment services.

Cremains
Interment of cremated remains can be done in a mausoleum niche, or in an in- ground burial space.   Besides the purchase of one of these spaces, the interment services must be purchased. Outer burial containers are optional for cremains burials.

If you are purchasing at-need burial services, everything must be paid for in full.  Pre- need arrangements can be purchased on account over a period of up to five years. We offer reasonable rates and keep your account in-house.

Spaces in Spring Hill Cemetery

The premium area of Spring Hill is located around the Marshall Memorial.  The Memorial is on the highest point of the cemetery, overlooking the city of Huntington and Marshall University.  The Marshall Memorial honors the University football team, coaches, staff and supporters who died in the November, 1970 plane crash.  In front of the obelisk are six unmarked graves, in memory of the victims that could not be identified.  The names of these six are engraved in the front face of the memorial.

Coming down the hill from the Marshall Memorial area is a circular drive surrounding an area we call 1953D- Bronze.  Upright monuments dominate the outer edges of the circle, while only bronze on granite markers are allowed on the inner part of the circle.  Plans have been made to build a carillion bell tower near the center of the circle.

There is an area set aside for Veterans on the southern boundary of the cemetery.  Atop that knoll is a dominating cross that was placed in 1925, when the Board of Park Commissioners set aside this special place, called Soldier’s Rest, for military personnel.  Soldier’s Field is located directly across the street from Soldier’s Rest.  The graves are all marked with upright marble government markers.  There is an aura of honor and pride when you stand among these markers.  It is a beautiful place.

For the most part, Spring Hill Cemetery is dominated by large trees and rolling hills.  The older areas of the cemetery are located near the office, on the eastern border of the property.  Our office was once a chapel, and was built in the early 1900’s.  There are approximately 25 undeveloped acres on the western side of the cemetery.  Soon trees will be placed so that in time it too will have tall oaks and maples, beautiful dogwoods and brooding willows.

Spaces in Highland Cemetery

Highland Cemetery was established in 1892, and adopted by the Park District when Spring Hill was, in 1925.  Highland is a traditional country hillside cemetery located off of Saltwell Road in the Arlington Park neighborhood.  There are twelve streets crossing the fifteen acres of hillside that comprise Highland Cemetery.  Spaces for flat as well as upright markers are available.

Interment Services

Interment fees, or opening and closing as they are sometimes called, can include 50 or more separate services provided by the cemetery.  Typically, the opening and closing fee includes administration and permanent record keeping (determining ownership, obtaining permission and the completion of other documentation which may be required, entering the interment particulars in the interment register, maintaining all legal files); opening and closing the grave (locating the grave and laying out the boundaries, excavating and filling the interment space); installation and removal of the lowering device; placement and removal of artificial grass dressing at the grave site, leveling, tamping, regrading and seeding the grave site.

Interment service fees are higher when purchased pre-need.  The reason for this is that we are hoping you will live a long time after you have made your purchase.  Once a few years have passed, as prices continue to increase, the at-need cost of interment services will become more than what you paid pre-need.  You will not pay any additional internment services fees as these prices increase.  The price you paid when making the pre-need arrangements is all you will pay for interment services.

Vaults

A vault is required by the cemetery for in ground burial.  The vault helps stabilize the ground and minimize settling of the grave.  Vaults can be purchased through the Spring Hill and Highland Cemetery office or through your funeral home.

The vaults available from the Spring Hill and Highland Cemeteries office are concrete and there are three types.  A basic vault is treated with asphalt.  The mid-range vault is treated and sealed at the lid.  The upper level vault available from us is a treated, sealed and lined model.

Other types of vaults are available through your funeral home.  If a vault is brought from another company, there will be a vault setting fee.

Memorial

The memorial, either upright or flat, granite or bronze or some combination of the two, is an important purchase.  You can buy any type of memorial, granite as well as bronze, through the Spring Hill and Highland Cemeteries office at Spring Hill.  There is an almost limitless range of shapes for upright markers, and designs that can be carved into flat or upright markers.  We are proud to sell the highest quality bronze markers available today – the Matthews International Impact markers with Diamond Shield finish. Matthews’ foundry is in Kingwood, WV.  The finish on these markers lasts longer than those from other companies and come in several color choices – including black cherry, Aztec green, aquamarine and dark teal green as well as the classic light brown.

When you are ready, stop in our office and take a look at some of the memorials available today.  Financing is available on site for all purchases, at reasonable rates.
