Park District Cemeteries

The grounds of our cemeteries are sacredly devoted to the interment and memory of the honored dead.

As a manifestation of the respect and affection which our community bestows upon those who are buried here, it is intended that our cemeteries be perpetually areas of quiet beauty and serenity - to beckon the living as well as to provide repose for the dead.

Our heritage is enriched by the lives and deeds of the men and women who have preceded us. It is, therefore, our goal, as part of the remembrance of them, to maintain permanent records of those whose earthly remains have been entrusted to us.

It is further the goal of GHPRD to provide empathetic and effective service to the citizens of the Huntington area in the years to come.

Spring Hill Cemetery

The premium area of Spring Hill is located around the Marshall Memorial. The Memorial is on the highest point of the cemetery, overlooking the city of Huntington and Marshall University. The Marshall Memorial honors the University football team, coaches, staff and supporters who died in the November, 1970 plane crash. In front of the obelisk are six unmarked graves, in memory of the victims that could not be identified. The names of these six are engraved in the front face of the memorial.

Coming down the hill from the Marshall Memorial area is a circular drive surrounding an area we call 1953D- Bronze. Upright monuments dominate the outer edges of the circle, while only bronze on granite markers are allowed on the inner part of the circle. Plans have been made to build a carillion bell tower near the center of the circle.

There is an area set aside for Veterans on the southern boundary of the cemetery. Atop that knoll is a dominating cross that was placed in 1925, when the Board of Park Commissioners set aside this special place, called Soldier’s Rest, for military personnel. Soldier’s Field is located directly across the street from Soldier’s Rest. The graves are all marked with upright marble government markers. There is an aura of honor and pride when you stand among these markers. It is a beautiful place.

For the most part, Spring Hill Cemetery is dominated by large trees and rolling hills. The older areas of the cemetery are located near the office, on the eastern border of the property. Our office was once a chapel, and was built in the early 1900’s. There are approximately 25 undeveloped acres on the western side of the cemetery. Soon trees will be placed so that in time it too will have tall oaks and maples, beautiful dogwoods and brooding willows.

Highland Cemetery

Highland Cemetery was established in 1892, and adopted by the Park District when Spring Hill was, in 1925. Highland is a traditional country hillside cemetery located off of Saltwell Road in the Arlington Park neighborhood. There are twelve streets crossing the fifteen acres of hillside that comprise Highland Cemetery. Spaces for flat as well as upright markers are available.

Directions

The office for Spring Hill and Highland Cemeteries is located at Spring Hill Cemetery, 1427 Norway Ave. in a small chapel built around 1910.

To get to Spring Hill: From I-64, take Exit #11, Hal Greer Blvd. Turn North, toward Huntington. At the 2nd light, turn right. Continue until this road ends, at Woodland Dr. turn left. At the light, turn left onto Norway Ave. Spring Hill Cemetery is on the left, approximately .1 miles. The office is located near the first entrance, which has an iron gate and brick roadway. The second entrance is .2 mi. further down Norway Ave., and is divided by a flagpole.

To get to Spring Hill Cemetery from within Huntington, come to the south end of 20^th Street, bear left and Spring Hill Cemetery is immediately on your right.

Highland Cemetery is located on Saltwell Rd. To get there from I-64: Take Exit #15, 29^th Street. Head west on Rt. 60 for approximately 2 mi. At Washington Blvd., directly across from Special Metals Industrial Complex, turn left.

From this left turn, Saltwell Rd. is .1 mi. on the left. Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is at the beginning of Saltwell Rd. Highland Cemetery is .4 miles on the left; Highland Cemetery Annex is on the right.
